Jim and Helen Rinehart bought the tiny jewelry department from Dr. Clay Walker's optometrist office on west Cherry Street. The Rineharts moved to the present location at 205 W. Cherry in 1954. After several expansions and additions, Rinehart Jewelry is still growing strong. It was a center for meetings, gracious dining, and dancing. Over the decades, the hotel served many famous guests, including Frank James, John L. Sullivan, Richard Nixon, Arthur Godfrey, and Cole Younger. With the coming of the automobile, people relied less on trains and the town of Nevada slowed its rapid growth. The fifty luxurious rooms lost their luster as new owners were unable to justify the expense of upkeep. In 1998, after years of serving as housing for lower income clients, the main part of the building, including the lobby, was demolished and is now a parking lot. Only the mural on the side of our building commemorates the glory days.

It is now a lovely loft apartment with all-new plumbing and wiring, but with exposed brick walls and restored milled woodwork. You can see the change in the first floor, where they took out the drop ceiling, scrubbed plaster from the brick, and turned the old back door into our cooking fireplace. They are proud to give the historic building new life and remember the glory of the Mitchell Hotel in its heyday.

But what makes Cherry Street Grill so unique in Nevada and to the surrounding areas is their wood fire used to grill the meats and seafood, and their delicious soups, bread, and atmosphere.

The Sun Went Down and the Music Turned Up!

By: T.J. Hudson

As the sun went down
over the Nevada square, it was time for a night of music and mayhem at
the Comedy Tonight Theater. Fans began showing up around seven-thirty
on Friday evening March fifth, two thousand and ten. Four groups were
scheduled to perform live along with an all star cast of supporting
crew members. The new stage hosted music by the area bands Fraught with
Peril from Lamar Missouri, Electra City from Butler Missouri, Alamo
Black featuring: Nathan Rorabaugh from Nevada, Missouri, and Clinton
Houseman from Springfield, Missouri, and also included two special
performances from Recess On a Field Trip, with Parker Richardson from
Nevada, Missouri, and two brothers from El Dorado Springs, Missouri,
Russell, and David Henley. Nathan Rorabaugh was the event M.C. That
night, and Tony Wagoner, Comedy Tonight Theater Executive Director was
on sight to chaperoned the event. Among other volunteers that helped
out to make the night a great success was Nathan Conley, and Dangerous
Doug Harper who loaded in a five-thousand dollar light set up, and then
were light technicians for the evening. Last but not least was “Little”
Cody Reed, and the driving sound system that he operated to make the
fans not only able to hear, but also able to feel the music. What a
night it was full of a downtown experience like Nevada has not seen in
years. By eight-o-clock there were nearly ninety fans inside and out of
the Theater cheering the bands on, and throwing hands in the air
chanting lyrics to the songs, all the while the bass drum was pounding,
and the lights flashing in the same fashion as a chaotic color sea
would ripple and wave. It was an eventful evening full of rocking
sounds from the region, full of original and independent music for area
music fans listening enjoyment.

Web Page Host “Laid Back and Mellow” A Unique Concert Event.

By: T.J. Hudson

The sounds of mellow music made the
night of nearly fifty music fans on March 6, 2010, at the Comedy
Tonight Theater on the Nevada square. Though there were only
forty-six patrons inside the Theater there were also a host of twelve
performers, and three crew members, as well as a hand full of folks
chilling outside visiting with friends and just stopping by when
walking the dogs to see just what was going on. Everyone seemed to be
very pleased and enjoyed the diverse and eclectic mix of music played
by many area performers that night. “We had people drive in to town
from, Stockton MO, Moundville MO, Sheldon MO, Pittsburg KS, and one
couple from Kansas City, just to listen to the music” Tony Wagoner,
Executive Director of Comedy Tonight said. “Some were music fans,
some were friends of bands, and some were there to showcase their
original music” he also told some people just walking by, when they
asked who is here tonight? It was a great night of very talented, and
active singers, musicians, and songwriters in our area. The roster
included Joe Willis, the only Vernon County resident to perform on
both the old and new Grand Ol' Opry stages in Nashville Tennessee.
Also on board was singer/songwriter Matthew Harper, an area folk
singer that will be featured on an upcoming motion picture soundtrack
for an independent film titled “Zombie X-Terminators”. Ryan
Wallace was also in the house that night with a alt-country style set
including some great sounding music, Ryan is a college level graphics
design teacher in Springfield, and an ex-member of the Chicago based
band Levee. Dan Divine a singer/songwriter who was featured in
American Songwriter Magazine for his song “Tree in the Front Yard”
also performed that night. Aubry Robinson and Eric Good are both new
to performing together but sounded great, Aubry from Truth or
Consequence, New Mexico has recently moved to Nevada as she puts it
“I feel at home here, and there is nowhere I have found with a
music scene like Nevada, and I have been lots of places”. Her
counterpart Eric Good has performed in bands in the area for a few
years and is now back in action singing backing vocals with Aubrey,
and playing the guitar. There was also a performer by the name of
Anthony Jameson, from Stockton Missouri, who performs and sounds a
lot like Bob Dylan, though Anthony also sings his own songs, and has
a CD out. Lorrie Divine also performed with her friends, David
Byerly, Eric Lane Gulliford, and Cody Reed, Lorrie owns the
Moundville Market in Moundville Missouri, is the wife of Dan Divine,
and is very active in supporting local music. We can't forget
Dangerous Doug Harper the heartbeat of the local music scene who is
receiving a silver record at Hard Rock Cafe for the nearly 300,000
copies of his song “I Found Myself a Monkey” that were
distributed throughout the United States. The “Monkey Song EP”
also was featured and reviewed on Rolling Stone magazines web sight
for the effort as well. Doug was the host of the show, and kept the
crowd going in between performances. It was a fun night for all who
attended, and another similar event will be coming up on April 3rd,
2010. For more information on the Performers, the Local Ear, or the

My review of the show

It
was a good feeling to get to rock out on a half stack like the good old
days. The guys were really feeling good about the set and we all put
forth an honest effort to rock. The crowd was slow but they received us
well, and seemed to be jamming along good, and stuck it out through all
three sets that we played, as there was no opener it was just us,
Hollywood Adventure that night at the Comedy Tonight Theater on the
Nevada square on Saturday, February sixth. I felt like it was a great
way to bring in the new month, and showcase almost three hours, and a
complete catalog of songs I have written and recorded over the past
seventeen years. It felt good. I was young again. Honest rock n’ Roll.

The Show Must Go On!

Even with a snow covered roadway the
show must go on. The lights danced in front of the Comedy Tonight
Theater on a cloud covered, frosted evening Saturday January 30,
2010. While a few cars drove slowly by looking to see what was
happening on the Nevada square that night, many more stopped to see
the action. Two performers were set to perform that night, Alamo
Black a duo consisting of Nathan Rorabaugh, Nevada Missouri, and
Clinton Houseman, Springfield MO, and Matthew Harper a solo singer
songwriter from Nevada, Missouri also. Music fans seated themselves
in the new cozy padded chairs at the theater, and were ready for some
music, as the last minute sound system adjustments were made. Then,
the overhead lights went dark. The stage was warmly lit by four
colored stage lights. Matthew Harper was the first to perform. Smooth
strums on the guitar mixed with commanding vocals, made way for a
later performance on the harmonica, and a few songs were also played
on an electric guitar covered with vintage sixties sounding fuzz
tones. The nineteen music fans in the theater seemed to be taken away
on a journey to times past with Matthew's stories, sounds, and songs.
Next was the Alamo Black duo. The duo allowed longtime friend, Indian
Bob Bittner to join them on stage for one song before their set
began. Bob was a crowd pleaser, with his Elvis like moves and his
chant sounding vocals. Now Alamo Black was underway, their set
included several of their new songs quickly taking fans by storm on
Myspace, and new fans were given free three song demos after the set.
The one electric and one acoustic sound melted together nicely with
cool double guitar parts and friendly solos from Clinton. All and all
the night was a success even though the crowd was down a bit most
likely caused by the bad weather, but the show went on and this is
what the folks that were there had to say...
